Zero-Touch Provisioning of OpenWiFi Solutions from EPS Global

thyssenkrupp were experiencing reliability issues with their existing aging WiFi network across hundreds of sites. The controller connections were unstable, causing configuration issues and outages yet the costs for both hardware and licenses were high.

thyssenkrupp worked with EPS Global to migrate to OpenWiFi and the results speak for themselves:

  • 60% - 70% lower CapEX and OpEx lower than the legacy vendor
  • A single cloud-based controller system for dramatically simplified network management
  • Better coverage supporting critical operations in their office & challenging industrial environments
  • Rolled out to over 30 sites in Australia, India, Spain, France, UK, Germany, Switzerland and Portugal.

Executive Summary

thyssenkrupp Materials Services faced the challenge of modernizing its Wi-Fi infrastructure across approximately 280 sites while reducing costs and simplifying deployment. Through collaboration with EPS Global and its partners, the company implemented an innovative OpenWiFi solution that delivered significant cost savings, improved performance, and streamlined operations.

Challenge

thyssenkrupp needed to refresh its aging Wi-Fi infrastructure across hundreds of locations, including large warehouses with challenging environmental conditions. The company sought a solution that would:

  • Scale efficiently across their distributed sites
  • Operate reliably in industrial environments with dust and humidity
  • Enable deployment without requiring technical expertise at each location
  • Reduce both operational and capital expenses
  • Maintain stable connectivity for business-critical warehouse operations

"Our requirements are different from typical data center environments," explains Marco Decker, Head of Software-Defined Network Services at thyssenkrupp Materials Services. "We operate in industrial areas where equipment must withstand dirt, dust, and humidity while maintaining stability. With hundreds of sites across Europe and Asia, we needed hardware that could be easily installed with minimal on-site technical support."

Solution

EPS Global, led by their German representative Frank Krämer, introduced thyssenkrupp to OpenWiFi technology and orchestrated a comprehensive solution involving multiple partners. The solution included:

  • OpenWiFi-compatible hardware pre-configured for zero-touch deployment
  • Cloud-based controller systems for centralized management
  • Comprehensive pre-deployment testing and configuration services
  • Streamlined logistics and direct site delivery

"We value having a knowledgeable partner who can provide expert guidance and support throughout the deployment process," notes Decker. "EPS Global handles all the preparatory steps, including software image management, comprehensive testing, serial number documentation, and controller onboarding."

Implementation

The deployment process was designed for simplicity and reliability:

  1. thyssenkrupp places hardware orders with EPS Global
  2. EPS Global manages pre-configuration, testing, and verification
  3. Equipment ships directly to business sites, fully prepared for installation
  4. On-site personnel connect the pre-configured devices using simple instructions

To ensure smooth transitions, thyssenkrupp adopted a "big bang" approach, replacing all access points at each location during off-hours to prevent signal overlap issues between old and new systems.

Results

The implementation delivered significant business benefits across multiple areas:

Cost Reduction:

  • Approximately 60% reduction in both operational and capital expenses compared to previous solutions
Improved Performance:
  • Enhanced coverage in challenging warehouse environments
  • Stable connectivity for mission-critical scanning operations
  • Sufficient bandwidth for office applications including video conferencing

Operational Efficiency:

  • Simplified deployment process requiring minimal technical expertise
  • Reduced installation issues through comprehensive pre-configuration
  • Improved reliability with fewer connection interruptions and reboots

"The sites that have transitioned to OpenWiFi are performing exceptionally well," says Decker. "The business is highly satisfied with both the cost savings and improved service stability. The significantly lower cost per access point enables us to deploy additional units strategically, ensuring optimal coverage in areas requiring greater signal strength."

Future Outlook

Based on the success of implemented sites, thyssenkrupp is actively working to migrate all remaining locations to the OpenWiFi platform. The company continues to collaborate with EPS Global to explore additional innovative solutions for their networking needs.

"We are happy to have EPS Global on our side," concludes Decker. "From the first moment, I had a very good relationship with EPS and especially with Frank Kramer, who was supporting us in a very great way. I'm really looking forward to working together with EPS in the future and continuing the improvement and update process of our hardware platforms."
